Thomas Newman married by 1699 Bridgett Willson, daughter of Elias Willson the elder (16??-1699). The groom was the son of Thomas Newman who lived upon the Rappahannock Creek and seemingly a kinsman of Captain Alexander Newman (16??-1698) who left the said Thomas Newman (Jr.) his landed estate. On 30 Dec 1700 Thomas Newman conveyed to Captain John Tarpley the land bequeath to him by Captain Alexander Newman, deceased. The last will and testament of Captain Alexander Newman was proved in court 1 Jun 1698 and recorded in now lost Richmond Cunty WB#1 (1692-1699). In 1711 various depositions were taken in regard to the will of Captain Alexander Newman as it appears there was some contention as to which of the several Thomas Newmans the said Captain bequeathed his land. 9 May 1702 Petition Recorded - To his Excellency Francis Nicholson, Esq, Lieut. and Governor of Virginia. The petition of William Smoote shows that the petitioner having behaved himself as a loyal subject ought to do, notwithstanding, Capt John Tarpley, R Sheriff, did come to the house of your petitioner in your petitioner's absence upon last Mar 26, and there under pretence of seizing for pulic dues, which your petitioner had already paid, but having no receipt sd Tarpley did beat your petitioner's wife very much and abuse her after a very grievous manner and wounded her in several places and threatened her so much that she is afraid to stay at home. Afterwards sd Tarpley broke open a door of the petitioner's house that was nailed and it was God's mercy that sd Tarpley had not killed a young child that was behind the door. The petitioner has asked the County Court to account with the sd Tarpley and he refuses to come to an account. Tarpley has retained all the attorneys that belong to the County Court thinking to justify his unlawful doings, so that the petitioner being a poor man and having a great charge of small children and having no relief if not relieved by your Excellency, therefore the petitioner implores your Excellence relief.
