Matthew Casey was born 1826 in Wayne County and died in 1901 in Johnston County. He married Sally Anne, ca 1842, d. 1904, and both are buried on the family plantation on Swift Creek in Johnston County. His will mentions land "lying north of the cross fence running from the upper northwest corner of Willis' yard westward to Swift Creek known as my homeplace." His daughter's name Abbie Whitley is mentioned along with son Willis Casey. There was another son George D. Casey 1874-1880. Matthew's will was probated November 19, 1901.

Matthew was mentioned in his mother's 1860 will and refered to as Matthew "Jr." most likely to distinguish him from his older first cousin with the same name who lived in the same area.

1864 - Matthew was appointed guardian to Mary E. Casey and Wilamena Casey, daughters of his brother Lemuel and entered into bond in the sum of twenty thousand dollars with Bryan Casey, Abia Herring and Robert Peel securities. Wayne County, NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Feb Term 1864.

These minors were Matthew's nephews, sons of his sister Caroline and husband Josiah Fields.

In the Matter of Joseph F. Fields and John L. Fields - To the Honorable, the Judge of Probate of said County: The Application of Matthew Casey Jr., respectfully represents that Joseph F. Fields and John L. Fields are minor children of Josiah Fields deceased and are without a guardian: that the said minor children are entitled to real and personal estate to the value of Six hundred and twenty five dollars according to the best information and belief of your applicant. To the end, therefore, that the estate of said minor orphans may be preserved and managed according to law, your applicant prays that Letter of Guardianship may be issued to him or other such person as the Court may think best, for the interest of said minor orphans. This 9th day of July 1877. Matthew Casey Jr.

Wayne County: SS - Matthew Casey Jr. being duly sworn says that he is acquainted with the real and personal estate belonging to the above named children of Josiah Fields deceased; that to the best of his knowledge, information and belief, the value of said estate is about six hundred & twenty five dollars. Matthew Casey Jr. Sworn before me this 9th day of July 1877 W. T. Yelverton Judge of Probate.

Josiah Fields Estate Papers, 1877 - Probate Court Wayne County - The undersigned Guardian of Joseph F. Fields and John L. Fields asks that an order may be granted him to sell the perishable property of his wards a list of which is herewith filed for the reasons that the same is liable to perish on the hands of your petitioner. Your petitioner further asks that he may be granted the privilege of selling the specified property for cash for the reason that he believes it will sell for its full value also that there is risk in selling on time in getting good security and your petitioner or his wards estate might suffer by giving credit. C. Creech's corner, road leading from Smithfield to Ford's Mill, W. B. Coats' corner, J. W. Avera's line containing 400 acres on which J. B. Dunn now lives known as the Ed Sanders place. Witness: J.
